Sulphur Emission Control Areas

Since January 2015, all vessels operating in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) also referred to as Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECA), have had to ensure that their emissions are reduced.

In order to meet these regulations, vessel operators are required to use a low sulphur fuel or install a scrubber to remove sulphur from exhaust emissions.

To help ship owners and operators meet regulations for vessels operating in Emission Control Areas (ECAs), certain major suppliers have developed a new category of low sulphur fuels, which currently aim to resolve current sulphur issues. Alternatively vessels can use 0.10% sulphur Marine Gas Oil, which is available at numerous ports worldwide.

The MARPOL Annex 6 regulations are part of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from ships (Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships). The ECA it has established are the Baltic Sea area, the North Sea area, the North American area (covering designated coastal areas off the United States and Canada) and the United States Caribbean Sea area (around Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands).

The below ECA map identifies current emission control areas.
